We’re here, I’m queer!
As in strange. I’ve posted about our arrival and my weird reaction to this place at Jack & Hill. It’s deeply, but not unexpectedly, moving.

We’re off to Slovakia and Austria for a few days. See ya, suckers!

Far too many people associate strident capitalism with being “anti-worker” and shameless support for big business. So this is well worth a read:
Big Business is often lousy at defending the market and in fact is only too happy to co-opt the State to make life hard for competitors…It appears that the U.S. retailing giant WalMart […]

While perusing the Dissident Frogman’s beautiful photos of London, accompanied by his fantastic, funny captions, I came across this gem of an exchange between a DF visitor and the Frogzilla himself:
« Hello,
I don’t appreciate your texts really, but I like your photos on the other hand. I was wondering about the blur effects: large format […]

Friday night, standing in front of Charing Cross station, waiting for a bus, I found myself listening to a Bleatcast from James Lileks, one of my favourite writers on the web (or elsewhere). It was this Bleatcast in particular, about what Neil McIntosh describes as cultural references that wither with age. As Neil says, this […]

My love/hate relationship with the at turns horrifying and worthwhile O, the Oprah Magazine, may have suffered its death blow: This month’s issue features a fawning profile of Cindy Sheehan, written by Eve Ensler.
After the magazine’s sympathetic take, a few months ago, on female Palestinian suicide bombers and other terrorists, things were on pretty […]

A few months ago, I happened upon the Ryaniar website and decided to check out some routes for super cheap tickets. Minutes later, I’d purchased two return flights for Antoine and I to Bratislava, Slovakia, for the princely sum of £3.32 each (plus, of course, £26.93 each in taxes and levies). I called Adriana Cronin-Lukas […]

Nancy Rommelmann, as per usual, gets it exactly right. Her post about our friend Cathy is spot-on.
I think of her rather as a dance mistress in this. Her friends who knew about the cancer reacted with varying degrees of emotional spasticity: to ask or not to ask about the new chemo? Is bringing over more […]
A few weeks ago, I asked for urgent assistance with regard to a couple of cancer treatments, as part of frustratingly unfruitful efforts to help an unnamed friend get the care she needs. If you read her blog, and if you read her entry for yesterday in particular, you may have guessed that the friend […]
When I’m in “Wow, look how green that grass over there is!” mode, I really miss America. So Rob Rummel-Hudson’s Friday Night Lights photoset, scenes from a high school football game in Texas, really packs a punch for me. No, I’m not from Texas, and in my part of Ohio (heck, my part of Ross […]

Oliver Kamm has a new book coming out, published by the Social Affairs Unit. Entitled Anti-Totalitarianism: The Left-wing Case for a Neoconservative Foreign Policy, I’d recommend buying it not just for the contents, which are sure to be excellent, but also for the awesome cover.

It was great, all babies, friends, Little Britain, inch-thick steaks and a proper Sunday roast. We also walked round some lakes, some stables, and a big nature reserve.
Rediscovering weekends, as I have been since Antoine (and, thus, I) stopped working them, is proving to be unexpectedly glorious.

Madonna says that Michael Moore was “very instrumental” in the making of her new documentary, telling her:
[J]ust remember one thing: you write the script in the editing room.
Not sure if he’ll be chuffed with Madge for confirming the method to his madness, but it’s not like this was a very well kept secret of […]
I have neglected to link to Amy Alkon’s response to my post on inconsiderate public smokers only because I have been in deadline hell.
I like Amy’s reply. The remarks from those who have commented on it…not so much.
It seems that even when you state clearly and repeatedly that you abhor the idea of […]
