Sad but true

Antoine Clarke, in the comments here:
The beauty of George Orwell and the horror of contemporary UK politics is that parodying is not required and scarcely possible.
That said, I am excited as all get-out about getting back to London for the holidays. I was there last month, but only for two nights, which left me with […]

On transparency and community, online and off

Cecily has articulated some important thoughts and concerns (which I share) about how much to put out there and why. As someone who considers, almost daily, getting out of the blogging game, I found her experience enlightening:

I began to question what I gained by being so quiet over the last few years; all I […]

What is this drawer for?

Can anyone tell us what this drawer is for?

Neil McIntosh and his wife are stumped, as am I. (Get a closer look. “Hob” = stove in Britspeak.) Ideas welcome here or on Flickr.

How to think

This is so American. I admire such tenacity, but feel frazzled just reading about it. How do calm moments of quiet contemplation fit into such a life? Is that what meditation makes room for? Does caffeine really make such a lifestyle possible?
Ugh, I need a nap.

Quote of the day

Dave Winer:
Scott Karp asks if blogs can do journalism. Try this question. Can journalists do journalism? At best they seem to be able to copy each other, so mistakes propogate.

The generosity of sharing your peak moments

Wow. I’d never thought of it this way.
I remain in awe of people who can thoroughly celebrate their triumphs. The urge always to minimize, to dismiss, to shrug off achievement seems impossible to shake. How do you do it?

My number one productivity killer in 2007

Scrabulous, by a very wide margin, ate more of my time than any other online distraction this year. I suspect that little will change in 2008. (If you’re on Facebook and fancy a match, feel free to challenge me.) The New York Times recycles a Wall Street Journal stat claiming that Scrabulous earns roughly $18,000 […]

Early Christmas dinner with friends

Originally uploaded by dynamist.

I’ll be in London for Christmas, so was grateful to get the chance to celebrate the holiday early on Sunday with some Cincinnati friends. We had a big turkey dinner, lovingly prepared by…not the men pictured sitting down, drinking beer, and watching football, let’s just say. (To be […]

Another NHS horror story

Those who think “universal healthcare” is a sound idea will find this story tricky, but this one also hit me hard: The drug that the government will not allow the patient to buy for herself (yes, you read that correctly), Avastin, is one that really helped my friend, the late Cathy Seipp, during her lengthy […]

20 years ago today

Yeesh, I feel old being able to remember stuff that happened so long ago. I was ten when this happened in my hometown, and the excitement reached a fever pitch in a uniquely small-town American way. I just remember Chillicothe being invaded by news media, everyone at school talking of little else, and that I […]

California’s fiscal emergency

Jeff Nolan, California taxpayer:
It’s funny how California’s media loves to point out that Schwarzenegger is popular despite being a Republican, which isn’t hard to believe when you look closely at how much he resembles the Democrats in Sacramento…If you live and pay taxes in California, grab your wallet and bend over because there is one […]

Saturday morning Servatii’s

5chw4r7z35 at Servatii’s

Originally uploaded by dynamist.

Mr and Ms 5chw4r7z and I trudged through the snow (okay, skipped through the puddles) for breakfast yesterday. The food was fine, but the highlight was bumping into a couple of other quite friendly downtowners. (They’d moved from a house on a golf course in West Chester to downtown a […]

Scary

This video has been haunting me since I first saw it last week. As the commenters on YouTube say, it feels like a memorial. Perhaps it will be.

Heart not bleeding

There are plenty of heartbreaking stories of homelessness out there, but this isn’t one of them. And not just because, if you didn’t know better, you wouldn’t guess that the man pictured at the top of this story is homeless.
Earlier this week, his story was that those big, bad banks had transformed him from a […]
