The difference between bad business and bad government

Jeff Nolan on the broadcast industry’s attempts to disable fast-forward functionality in DVRs:

I always find it ironic that large and successful businesses seriously think they can compete by restricting customer choices and benefits. It reminds me of the RIAA’s near decade long fight against downloadable music. Rarely have we seen so much money spent on […]

Lots of good things are happening to my friends right now

The best part of my crappy Friday night with Skybus at Stewart Airport was spotting this picture while checking out Rob’s Flickr feed on my phone, then running to the newsstand to see People magazine’s rave review of his book. (I do think he was shafted, though: Only 3.5 stars out of 4? Whatever, People.)
I […]

Dear Elena

I can’t believe it has been two years since little Elena died.

Hillary Clinton isn’t paying her bills

This is disgusting.

My weekend was all about pregnancy cravings

Also popular: late night macaroni and cheese.
My oldest friend, Karri, is pregnant with her first baby. Ever since I found out, a couple of weeks ago, I have been on cloud nine about it. But I thought it was kind of a private thing and that I probably shouldn’t blog it, but then Karri […]

Mammograms at Macy’s

No joke - I shot this last night at the Easton Town Center Macy’s in Columbus:

Details:
The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital, Richard J. Solove Research Institute and Macy’s have partnered to bring you the JamesCare Mammography Center at Macy’s Easton Town Center.
…You’ll find a private suite staffed by breast health specialists. The staff will assist […]

Skybus needs customer service help

Last night was not the most fun I’ve had. The good news: Our flight wasn’t cancelled. The bad news: Skybus didn’t tell us anything, and didn’t themselves seem to know much.

Our flight from Stewart International (Newburgh, NY) landed at Port Columbus three hours late in the end.

En route to NYC

I will, no doubt, be Qiking and Twittering over the next few days, but blog posts should be sparse. Lucky yuns!
Back before too long, though, so don’t get overly happy about this little break.
EDITED TO ADD: Please do not go ape on me if I don’t approve comments immediately while I’m away. I’m not […]

No exit plan

Having so many writers for friends, I tend to feel comforted by reading their work when I haven’t seen them for a while. But somehow, whenever I read one of Nancy Rommelmann’s pieces, it just makes me miss her more. Her voice - sure and solid, tossing off deft phrases at every turn - is […]

Quote of the day

A Valleywag commenter, of all people, nails exactly what I find so baffling about the political bent of so many techies:
I never cease to be amazed when supporters of Open Source, Open Standards and the relative anarchy that such regimes allow turn to the government sector and want to do just the opposite: centralize everything.
It […]

Getting fingerprinted for the FBI

I am having so much fun with my new N95 and Qik’s live streaming mobile video! Right now this involves playing around with the hardware and software and figuring out how it all works.
Today I was at Lighthouse Youth Services, a wonderful Cincinnati organization that helps troubled and neglected kids. I had my volunteer […]

Debating the Portland streetcar comparison

There is some excellent discussion going on in the comments here. Makes a nice change from the usual echo chamber (both for and against) in this town when it comes to the streetcar question.

Venture Capital Wear

This is the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while. The “Don’t pitch me, bro” shirt made me laugh out loud when I spotted it on Venture Chronicles.

What I like about this picture is that it could just as easily have been taken 100 years ago. (Well, “just as easily” as in both of those places were already there, not “just as easily” as in they had digital photography.)
At left, St. Peter-in-Chains Catholic Cathedral; at right, the heart of […]
