People always look at me in horror when I say that I have zero problem with eating genetically modified foods. Even if I did, I would not consider it up to you or any politician to decide whether or not I should be permitted to do so, or whether it should be legal to do […]

Bear in mind that there’s an alarm going off during this ordeal:
The New Yorker story that accompanies the video makes for grim, fascinating reading.

Apple store, Palo Alto
Originally uploaded by dynamist.
Embarrassingly, we were waiting outside the Palo Alto Apple store for the doors to open first thing this morning. After a few seconds, the shame became too much and we walked over to Borders. (Yeah, I know: not much better.)
The Apple “genius” (I cannot call them that with a […]

The beauty blog that Hillary Johnson and I created and co-edit is today’s Typepad featured blog. I had no idea until someone mentioned it in email to me (thanks, Alison!). That shows you how often we check our traffic and referrer stats (read: never).
What’s funny to me is that I submitted our blog to […]

It is not the level of wealth that makes us happy. Instead, it is the process of betterment - the pursuit of it - that makes us happy. Whether we are twice as rich today as in 1971 has little bearing on our happiness, because it is in the past. Whether people can see their […]

I’m flying back to Silicon Valley today. Look out for me on Qik and Twitter in the meantime. I’ll be back in Cincinnati sometime next month.

A few weeks before Cathy Seipp passed away, she gave me her copy of our friend Hillary Johnson’s memoir. “I can’t believe you haven’t read it yet,” Cathy said. “It’s very good.”
This did not surprise me, familiar as I had become with my beauty blog co-editor’s writing chops. And yet, when I read it, […]

More fun in New York City with Michelle Oshen - this time, it’s a little PG13. In my defense, I had been awake for two days with only an hour’s sleep. (The truth is, I am probably like this even when well rested. Who knows or cares?)

I met up with my friend Ben Casnocha in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago for a long overdue reunion. As soon as we sat down, he started busting my chops. Typical.
Ben said his jaw hit the floor when he read my statement that I’m a very closed, private person. Later, Hillary Johnson […]

[T]o use Firefox, you need to be confident enough to download and use a browser that wasn’t the default when you first turned on your computer. That’s an empowering thing to do. It isolates you as a different kind of web user. Firefox is a gateway drug.

Some writers are so good that they make me want never to type another word. Hillary Johnson, my beauty blog co-editor, is one such writer. Here’s her description of Robert Piguet’s Bandit, a perfume:
It’s like being slapped in the face with a leather riding glove. A glove being held by a blonde, smokey-eyed German vixen […]
