British TV presenter Fern Britton is one of the rare celebrities whom it is difficult not to like. That said, I don’t believe for a second that she had weight loss surgery out of fear of being a “bad role model”.
For one thing, making major life changes for the sake of others rarely works. […]

What’s flow? From my friend Chris Yeh’s post on Ask the Harvard MBA about whether happiness makes you less of an achiever in your career:
Mihály Csíkszentmihályi’s work on flow shows that one of the most important motivations we have is the desire to experience that mental state.
“Flow is the mental state of operation in which […]

It’s been a brilliant trip, on more levels than I can share right now. Quite apart from work stuff, Sunday dinner at Luigi Malone’s in Cork, Ireland, with the lovely Phelan family was a definite highlight.
Leaving in a few hours. Will respond to emails etc once back in the US late Friday.

Back in March, my friend Pat Phelan gave me one of the MAXroam SIM cards that the company of which he is president, Cubic Telecom, produces. This trip to Ireland and the UK has been my first chance to use it, and I’ve saved a huge amount on mobile roaming charges as a result. (Full […]

Sometimes it is said that man cannot be trusted with the government of himself. Can he then be trusted with the government of others? Or have we formed angels in the forms of kings to govern him? Let history answer that question.

Almost every shop, from pharmacies/chemists to electronics stores and so many in between, now carries at least a limited range of iPod accessories. As a longtime member of the anything-but-iPod crowd (my iRiver is great, thanks), there is nothing more frustrating than coming upon a rack of shiny, pretty things and discovering that they have […]

I am so pleased for my friend Dan Korman, whose green general store in Cincinnati will celebrate its one year anniversary on June 1. The business has grown in leaps and bounds, and has become an important “third place” to residents in Over-the-Rhine and downtown Cincy - not to mention all those who come from […]

Hillary is always laughing at me, for more than one reason, but almost daily because of my failure to comprehend that it’s okay to leave the house looking casual. “You’re so midwestern,” she says. “People in California will run out of the house wearing anything. You really don’t have to be in a pre-planned outfit […]

For various reasons, I am quite interested right now in data portability and fully user-driven (not user-centric) data management. (Read all of Adriana’s posts on the topic - she is, as ever, talking so much more sense than anyone out there.) So this line from Dave Winer jumped out at me:
[T]oday I don’t think an […]

Ireland was great, and someday I can write about why and how. Now I’m in London, having enjoyed a very rainy, windy bank holiday Monday. (Some things have changed here, but certainly not the weather.) It’s really wonderful to be back in the UK, though, especially since I know I’m leaving again soon. Love ya, […]

Cities are bureaucratic fictions, much like companies are legal fictions. Which is why I was puzzled by Jeff Syroney’s Soapbox piece on why he won’t live in a city without a fringe festival. For whatever reason, Syroney erroneously attributes human qualities to a bureaucratic hierarchy.
The fact is that many individuals, operating under their own […]

What a cool product I get to work on! Thanks to Texas Congressman John Culberson for capturing this great footage (more here):

When Pat broached this delicate subject with me on Friday afternoon, I was frustrated by my inability to give him a concise, perfect solution. I don’t succeed in the following paragraphs, either, but perhaps this will clarify my position on helping others and how much is too much help to give.
First things first: As […]
