I’m disgusted to be back in this damn country where one sees the sun in the sky about as often as a diamond on a pig’s arse. I don’t give a shit for Normandy and la belle France… I think I must have been transplanted by the winds to this land of mud; surely I […]

For some reason, despite the snow in New York and Paris, and all of the decorations and music everywhere, it still doesn’t feel like the holiday season.

My heavy use of public transportation (not a moral choice*, before you start congratulating me for being so righteous; I love cars and driving!) has had me musing aloud and on this blog for a few years about the need for smarter technology for passengers. It seemed dumb to me, standing at a bus stop […]

I might have a stroke if I begin to describe all of the things that went wrong on my way here. But: Here I am! That’s good.
Le Web starts tomorrow, and even though this is a very brief “vacation” for me, I’ll be around the conference. Email me for my local French phone number […]

I don’t keep on top of Dopplr as much as I should, but every month or so I update it with my upcoming trips (and even past ones, for the sake of completeness). Luckily, I logged in a few days ago and saw that Adriana would be in the New York City area at the […]

I’m off to New York today, then flying to Paris on Sunday. This trip is partly work but will be 100 percent pleasure, as I will get to see dozens of my favorite people over the next four days. Really couldn’t be more excited (or stressed, as ever). Yay!

The Official Story now is that “unregulated capitalism” has tanked, and that regulation and government money must solve the problem. Idiot bankers caused the problem, and only the government can solve it. But I think that it is starting to be popularly understood that it was government borrowing on a huge scale that […]

“No,” my father replied to the idiot in front of him. “It’s just a Polish name.”
“Yeah, I knew it was one of those countries,” came the reply.
Let’s just say that I can relate to my friend Nancy Rommelmann’s essay, Funny, You Look Jewish. Here we are, in all our lapsed Catholicism, in LA two years […]

Most people I know hate covers, revering originals, but some artists manage to take someone else’s something special and make it their own. This Natalie Merchant cover of Jeff Buckley’s Last Goodbye (lyrics) is one of my favorites. Thanks to the person who put it on YouTube (though I ignore the videos for these things).

My friends filled my online kettle for the Salvation Army very quickly. (Yes, the donations have exceeded my goal - and you can still donate if you wish, or start your own kettle.)
I really appreciate the generosity everyone showed in helping out. I didn’t ask permission to share names of benefactors, so I won’t […]

Inspired by my friend Jeff Nolan (who made the most amazing Thanksgiving dinner ever last week, btw), I decided to attempt a modest fundraising drive for the Salvation Army. (My initial goal is $200.) This is one of America’s oldest and most generous charities, and I remember my parents ringing the bell for them when […]
