Quote of the day

Suppose that we were all starting completely from scratch, and that millions of us had been dropped down upon the Earth, fully grown and developed, from some other planet. Debate begins as to how protection (police and judicial services) will be provided. Someone says: “Let’s give all of our weapons to Joe Jones over there, […]

News from Qik HQ

I returned to California today, just in time to blog this:

Qik is pleased to announce that we have closed another round of funding, comprised of investments from Quest Venture Partners, CampVentures, and strategic individuals. A total of $5.5 million has been raised to continue Qik’s growth. We are also excited to welcome Marcus Ogawa to […]

Bureaucracy, the rule of no one, has become the modern form of despotism.

Two things about fireworks

Francis Flaherty: “Writing ain’t easy.”

It sounds so obvious, but I’ve lost count of the number of writers I’ve heard complain that it’s hard for them to do X or Y, and wonder aloud how to do X or Y without effort. Where they got the idea that writing isn’t hard work, or that it’s supposed to come easily, I […]

I have to talk about Gordon Brown again

I knew he was bad - dreadfully bad - at, well, everything. But public speaking is known to be one of the areas in which he regularly fails to shine. However, I had no idea he had gotten this dreadful. A politician who can’t lie properly - get yer coat, Gordo.
It’s almost enough to make […]

Thunderstorms = gorgeous skies

It’s been awfully humid in New York the last few days, with occasional torrential downpours to cool things off. I can forgive a lot of a weather system that gives us skies like this (photo is completely unedited - click thumbnail for larger versions):
