“A room full of people trying to use each other”

I think this, via Hugh, goes a long way towards explaining why I tend to avoid ‘networking’ events like Britney avoids underwear, and why I take the same approach as Fredd:

I don’t bother “networking” anymore, instead, I try to build relationships with people I find interesting, and who I think are doing interesting things. And I make it my mission to help them in any way I can to achieve their mission. I find this much more satisfying, much more honorable, and much more fun. And this is the cool thing about people….When you help them out in this way, they help you out. Not because it’s a tit for tat deal, but because both parties are engaged in a mutually beneficial relationship that extends beyond the next favor.

The most depressing networking events in the world take place in Westminster; most of the people in attendance are obviously damaged, on the make, and of stunningly average intellect. The most tolerable - and fun, even - are in Silicon Valley, where it’s hard to throw a bottle without hitting a genuine, clever, inquisitive person.

  1. ..Noooo! The most depressing “networking” meetings are on cold and dark Thursday mornings in a hotel in the West Midlands…a “stunningly average intellect” in Westminster would be such a treat!
