My driver’s license expired while I was in the UK (in Ohio, it expires at age 21, because of the utterly stupid drinking laws). I need to get a new one, which will involve re-taking the test. I also need to show them my Social Security card, which I lost during my move to the UK.

So I need to get a new Social Security card, for which they need photo ID which is recent…Like, say, a driver’s license. My almost decade-old passport will not be enough (but they’ll take it anyway, for up to a few weeks, which is not compatible with my work travel plans).

I can see why there is such a booming trade in identity theft.
