Are they right?

I’m reading Bastard Out of Carolina* right now, and at the beginning of the book is this quotation from James Baldwin:

People pay for what they do, and still more, for what they have allowed themselves to become. And they pay for it simply: by the lives they lead.

I also like this Steven Barnes quotation, via the wonderful Chris Yeh:

There is a price for everything you want in life. And the price is always paid in advance.

*NB Jena Malone took the starring role in the film version of Bastard Out of Carolina, and was also the subject of Jena at 15, an excellent piece of journalism by my friend Nancy Rommelmann.

One Response to “Are they right?”

  1. People don’t realize there’s a price for stealing, too…at least if they aren’t sociopaths, and maybe even if they are, in reputation.

The price for non-sociopathic thieves is in self-concept — you know if you steal, and in your own eyes, you become a thief.
