Australia is scary

Bye-bye, restaurant reviewers in Oz:

Writers in the US are afforded plenty of protection when writing reviews and criticisms since they’re stating opinions, and decisions like these in other countries will have a chilling effect on all kinds of legitimate speech — particularly as more and more people use the web to become critics.

One Response to “Australia is scary”

  1. Unbelievable stuff isn’t it? And yet another example of the ‘it’s always someone else’s fault’ attitude that seems to prevail. However, from what I’ve heard (husband is a Sommelier in a fine dining restaurant here in Sydney and its an industry where EVERYONE knows everyone else), the industry has basically rolled its eyes at the ruling and deemed the proprietors of the restaurant in question ‘idiots’, rather than jumping on the bandwagon. We can only hope that the industry practices some self-regulation in this matter, although this of course does not take away from the blow to free speech.
