Brokeback Mountain
Well, that was a disappointment. (Spoilers ahead!)
The only things that kept me awake were the scenery, Heath Ledger (who, for some reason I cannot put my finger on, reminded me of Luke Ford), and the fervent hope that it would get interesting any minute. I didn’t feel much sympathy for any character except Ennis’s wife. Was the selfishness and scheming of the two men supposed to be endearing? Were we expected to admire Ennis for supporting his kids financially? It was the least he could do, and the most he actually did, as far as I could make out. (Antoine, whose patience and ability to enjoy boring stuff stood him in good stead here, wasn’t as disappointed. But he had no real expectations of the film, unlike me.)
Bottom line: I had to cancel out the steaming pile of Brokeback with something better, so we came home and watched my new DVD of The Goonies.
