Calling the French election

I’d put money on Sarkozy to win this, and I don’t think it will be tight. Why not? Because I asked election nut Antoine, and he told me so.

Seriously: Antoine says that the big problem with Royal is that she’s so uninspiring to her core constituency, there’s little chance of there being a huge push on election day for her.

The very good news is that Jacques Chirac had a bad case of brain flatulence when it came to scheduling the election; if he’d pushed it back a bit, the statute of limitations on the crimes of which he is accused would have run out. But he didn’t, so he has a court date set for not long after the election. That will be a very difficult time for anyone who has a New Year’s resolution not to indulge in schadenfreude. Happily, I don’t…

  1. My impression of Royal? The political version of a beautiful but dim suburban housewife who doesn’t know how to balance her checkbook. Go Sarko!

  2. I did put money on this. The guy wants the job.
