(If you don’t know what a roast is - and almost all of the Brits I’ve spoken to about this have drawn a blank when the word came up - Wikipedia is a predictably sound source.)

Basically, it’s “Be really mean in a funny way to somebody you love who can not onliy dish it out, but can take it, too.” They just had a mostly really funny William Shatner roast on Comedy Central, which may be available on the web.
