Cincinnati Photo of the Day

Main Street, Over-the-Rhine

I spotted this iron inset in a building on Main Street on Saturday; the photo doesn’t do it justice. A Google search yields only one hit for Schreiber & Sons Iron Works of Cincinnati, which it seems was in operation in the mid- to late-1800s in this area.

Speaking of the olden days, Nasty, Brutish & Short (whose blog is well worth adding to your RSS reader) has some interesting history and debate on the proper pronunciation of Cincinnati. My paternal grandfather, who never lived here, always pronounced it Cincinnatah. (I have no idea how my maternal grandfather, who did live here later in his life - I met him only one time, my first trip ever to Cincinnati, when I was 9 or 10 - pronounced it.)
