From the provocatively titled post Evan Williams vs the Internet, the author of the 1994 piece Bill Gates vs the Internet writes:

If you find yourself in competition with the Internet, you should find a way out.

Whenever I quote Dave Winer, I make sure to run a disclaimer along the lines of: “This is from Dave Winer, with whom I disagree as often as I agree (if not more).” On the above point, I agree with him wholeheartedly.

I think I find myself talking about Dave Winer, and explaining him to people who’ve never heard his name, more than any other person on the planet. That says something. I’m just not sure what. [insert smiley here]

NOTE: Dave is an internet pioneer and I enjoyed an interesting and thought-provoking day in Berkeley with him when I first moved to the Bay Area. He has been nothing but civil to me, and even bought me lunch. I like him. But he also drives me crazy. If he didn’t exist, we’d have to invent him.
