Discriminating against carnivores in hiring

I have absolutely no problem with this. If you do, I’d love to hear why.

  1. Because I hate gamers and wish they’d die ASAP.

  2. That’s probably the smartest response I’ll get, Treach.

  3. Maybe I’m missing something here - why would any employer care about the eating habits of their employees?

  4. For some vegetarians, vegans, and others with particular eating habits (local-and-organic-only, for example), what someone eats is more of an ideological thing than a nutrition or hunger thing. (I have vegan and vegetarian friends who are not like this at all, I hasten to add.)

Or, maybe they just don’t want to pay a salary to someone who’s going to spend it on meat.

Either way, no one’s business but theirs how they run their private company.

  5. I also have no problem with this, as long as they don’t mind a bunch of carnivores publicly boycotting their games when they finally get to market (i.e. setting up a WeHateVegGamers.com site, contacting every SF network affiliate to do a story on their boycott efforts and to explain why carnivores should refuse to buy such games, hiring a celebrity for ads stating “I’d Rather Go Back to Atari Than Play Anti-Carnivore Video Games” etc. etc.).

After all, if such tactics are good enough for PETA, they’re good enough for the rest of us, right? ;o)

  6. “Either way, no one’s business but theirs how they run their private company.”

If they’re taking into account anything other than the skills and experience of candidates during the recruitment process then they’re running an odd kind of business, in my opinion! I’m surprised that this discrimination has been legally condoned, as the dietary habits of an employee surely have no bearing on their ability to do to the job? And you may just as well say that an employer has the right to dictate that they shouldn’t pay a salary to somebody who is gay, for example, if they disagree with that lifestyle choice.

Either way, I doubt they’ll get much hassle for this policy, as I imagine that most people will not actively look to work for this kind of self-righteous vegetarian outfit…!

That’s exactly what I’d say. It should not be the law’s business who a person chooses to hire for private enterprise. When taxpayer money is being used to pay the salary, I agree, no discrimination of this sort should be tolerated. But if it’s not my money or yours, it is none of our business whether someone chooses not to hire someone because they are white, because they wear Crocs, because they wear Mormon temple garments, because they are carnivores, etc.

  8. We have a vegan-only strip club here in Portland. To the best of my knowledge no carnivorous strippers are suing to work there.

How desperate do you have to be for a job to(as an omnivore) to want to write vegetarian promoting video games anyway?

  9. I think limiting one’s employees this way (or by refusing to hire gun owners or smokers) is going to result in fewer candidates for jobs, but it might also keep your insurance costs down. So maybe on balance it’s a good business decision. As far as me personally having a problem with it, I figure it’s generally none of my business how they run theirs. I might decide they’re not someone I want to buy from, though. I never went to Cracker Barrel after they fired all their gay employees.
