Easiest ever meal for guests

Here’s what I made and how I made it for last night’s dinner.

One funny thing: We didn’t have any real reason for inviting Tim and Helen round, except that we hadn’t done so since they had their baby in December - and they’d had us over to their place for meals since then. Tim spoke to Antoine yesterday about whether he should bring red or white wine, and when Antoine called me to ask which I preferred, I said I didn’t care because I didn’t plan on drinking. When Tim and Helen arrived, I was wearing a sort of empire-waisted top which, although comfortable, does make me look kind of pregnant (no, I don’t care).

And then, Antoine busted out the champagne. We don’t really ever need a reason to drink champagne, because we like it (I’ll always have a glass, even if I’m not drinking any other alcohol).

“Look, before you guys get the wrong idea,” I said (Antoine was giving me a puzzled look at this point”, “I’m not pregnant.” Turns out that Tim had thought I was as soon as Antoine said I wouldn’t be drinking, and said so to Helen. The appearance of champagne had just made the anticipation of an announcement even greater, nevermind the line cut by my wardrobe choice.

Well, we should be so lucky, someday. For now, we settle for the babies our friends are having, like Tim and Helen’s happy, smiley, calm little Pippa, and live in hope.
