Fisking UK passport requirements

This post from my friend Michael Jennings is detailed but important - and, sad to say, not entirely shocking to me. I never applied for a UK passport precisely because I could imagine nothing more harrowing than going through this rigmarole. (The years-long process of applying and waiting for a visa was nightmarish enough.) Michael really nails it here:

[I]f I had lived my life in the way the state wants and in close contact with its “services”, then complying with requests such as this would be relatively simple and straightforward. However, if I don’t want to live my life the way the state thinks I should, then life is made harder. This may not be deliberate. It may not even be comprehended that anyone would want to do this, but it is so. Or it may be deliberate.

I can’t imagine that it has escaped the notice of politicians and bureaucrats that demanding paperwork available only from the huge state which they are trying to grow even larger does indeed make everyone dependent upon that state, and thus reinforces the “But we need a government, who else will do these things?” mentality. Entire nations are brainwashed by such subtle propaganda, and I’m afraid that the UK is not showing any signs of being de-programmed anytime soon.
