Food, floods, and famine: Capitalism to the rescue once again!

Eating local, seasonal produce certainly can be tasty (especially if the range of fruits and vegetables you enjoy is quite limited). But as those now fighting to survive the flooding in England are finding out, globalization saves lives. Johnathan Pearce:

The next time you watch a programme or read an article going on about the wonders of self-sufficiency and which bash supermarkets and global trade in foodstuffs, ponder what would happen if we really were reliant on the local farmers for everything we eat.

Similarly, you can have a world free of famine or you can have entire populations reliant on subsistence farming, but you cannot have both.
