Good parenting, the classical liberal way

Reports that video games are good for kids remind me of this most excellent pamphlet by Iain Smedley, from way back in 1994: Sonic the Hedgehog as Individualist Hero (PDF, unpretty HTML). I knew I’d gotten something out of the hours that I used to play Sonic and Super Mario Brothers 3 with my brother…
Iain and his American-born wife, Bunny, are thoroughly fantastic people with the most charming little boy, George, who is very lucky to have these two genuine liberals for parents. (Bunny’s Social Affairs Unit piece, Babies by the Book: A Personal Journey Through the Literature of Parenting, is - as best I can judge from my perspective as a childless woman - a most excellent primer for any aspiring mother.)

Steven Johnson, “Everything Bad is Good For You” - if you’ve not read it already - is brilliant and funny on this - perfect airplane book. Naturally, I spent my childhood like it was 1927 and missed out on all the huge cognitive benefits, but hey.
Yes, very good book!
I only got into easy games like Mario, Sonic, Puzzle Bobble, Duck Tales, etc. I don’t like trying to learn complex games or trying to master complex controllers. These days, the only game I play is Snood.
