Happiness Project, Facebook edition

I am absolutely thrilled that the Happiness Project group I started on Facebook - with the blessing and encouragement of Happiness Project author Gretchen Rubin - has taken off so quickly. One day after announcing its creation, there are already more than 250 members! (Anyone on Facebook can join.)

When I had the idea for the group, I was hesitant to approach Gretchen about it. It seemed like a no-brainer to me. But she and I don’t really know each other, and I was scared she might think it was creepy of me to be so enthusiastic about her project. But I ignored that sneering voice in my head (which, after a great conversation with my shrink, I am imagining belongs to Bill O’Reilly) and contacted her anyway.

One week later, Gretchen and I were sitting in a Starbucks on 7th Avenue in New York, talking about the fun and fear of creating the group and then letting go of any attachment to outcomes for it. We still don’t know what people are going to do with the group, but I’m looking forward to seeing how things unfold. So far, so enjoyable. As ever, Bill O’Reilly deserves to be ignored.

Edited to add: Thanks to my friend Ben Casnocha for introducing me to Gretchen via his blog!

  1. Again, thank you, Jackie, for setting up the group on Facebook! I was nervous about meeting YOU — would you think I was an idiot for not knowing more about Facebook? Would I be embarassed that no one joined the group? But we both gave it a shot! More proof that the rules for happiness really do work, when we actually follow them.

  2. Awesome! I’ve joined.
