How to get a response out of me

Celeb manager Benny Medina has put all of his contacts on notice that he is no longer using e-mail. Medina says that he’s easy enough to get hold of via phone, and that e-mail leaves people thinking they’ve followed up on something adequately when they haven’t.

I just thought this would give me another opportunity to state that I feel exactly the opposite way: If I could, I’d put all my contacts on notice that I will no longer be using the telephone. I’d take e-mail over phone any day of the week, as I dislike being interrupted and my productivity is damaged by the pointlessness and inefficiency of most of the phone calls I get. (When I was working full-time as Latitude’s head of marketing, I had no fewer than ten people per day calling me to pitch me on their products and services, to the point where I had to put my phone on do-not-disturb in order to get through a simple task without interruption.) My mobile voicemail now directs callers to e-mail me if they really want a response, because I seldom check my voice messages.

Even if I’m hearing from someone I’m DESPERATE to hear from, I’d rather get an e-mail than a phone call. Exceptions to this are Antoine, my best friend from back home, my dad, and my brother. Everyone else, please e-mail me unless you have to talk to me about something which is both urgent for and important to both of us.
