I am never moving again!

Yes, I’ve said that about four times in the last year and a half, but THIS TIME I MEAN IT.

I could not - simply COULD NOT - have got everything done without the help of my amazing friend Mary. She kept offering to help and I kept telling her no, taking pride (useless emotion that it is) in the fact that I have never asked anyone to help me move (except for people I’ve paid to help me move). But luckily Mary overrode my decision and took two days off work to pitch in and get me moved out of that apartment. Every time I thank her, she says, “Oh, it was good exercise and so fun! We got to talk so much!” That is a friend, people.

Now we are at her house, working side by side on rather less strenuous things, like our full-time jobs:

  1. Well done!!

I can never believe what utter hell moving is. Apparently you can actually pay to get people to pack everything up for you. Definitely worth the few days’ earnings you lose by doing it yourself (if it works-never tried it).

  2. I paid three people to help me, plus a cleaner, but you do have to do quite a lot yourself. Who can sort through my clothes and know what to donate, what to pack, etc?

  3. Well done.

I agree that you should never ever ask friends to help you move and you should discourage them if they want to help. Moving is too horrible a thing inflict on your friends. I did it by myself (except for paying for a cleaner) a couple of months ago, and it was horrible, but it got done.

On the other hand, it is awfully nice to have somebody help you.

I have to do the packing and unpacking myself. Nobody else knows the answer to the question of what is of value to me. The fact that I have nerd values makes this worse. Things that other people evaluate as “rubbish” might be amongst my most valued possessions. (Actually Ithis probably has nothing to do with “nerd values”. I suspect we are all like this).
