I’m not the only one

It is partly that you think something terrible is about to happen and partly that you feel slack and depressed when you are not in a state of emergency.

-Nigella Lawson, who has the excuse of having lost her mother, sister, and husband to cancer by the time she was 40 to explain why she feels this way. I have no such excuse.

It’s somewhat comforting to see this put into words, as it’s the most accurate description I have found for what life is like - for me, anyway. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one.

  1. Of course, there is a solution to the Nigella syndrome but it would possibly not be palatable to a Samizdata girl.

  2. Now I’m intrigued. What do you mean, James?

  3. It almost sounds like you’re a pessimist, which I never would have guessed. Of course, even a natural pessimist can counteract her instincts!

  4. S.A.D.?

  5. I don’t think it’s SAD, but the darkness this time of year does not help.

Chris, I wouldn’t class myself as a pessimist in most things, and yet…here I am, feeling that disaster is about to strike at any second. Very strange contradiction - will talk to my therapist about it.
