I’m so lucky! My friend Kelly is a born aesthete, every bone in her body possessing style, poise, and good taste. I recently helped her with something for which she feels she can never repay me (which is rubbish), and we finally figured out that she would feel less indebted to me if she helps me whip this flat into what I want it to be.

Now, I am incredibly fortunate that this place makes an amazing blank canvas. Even if it were empty, its architecture, age, and embellishments lend it an innate character and refinement that most homes lack. The trick is to combine that with my favorite things to create a home that I feel lives up to its potential.

Right now, I absolutely love this place, but I know it can be even better. I have tons of ideas but, when it comes to executing them, I fall apart. Whereas Kelly sees the execution as no big deal, because she’s been doing big projects like this her whole life. She is exactly what I need.

My first task is to make a list of what issues keep me awake at night - lack of art on the walls, for example (and YES, I know that I am insanely blessed if that’s the kind of thing over which I lose sleep). My second task is to gather all of the things I own and love and want to incorporate into this living space. My third task is to make a list of all of the big things I need - I can (and no doubt always will) acquire the little things (cushions, mini prints, picture frames) on an ongoing basis. The priority is on setting the scene for them with the major stuff.

I also have to send Kelly links to looks that I like and would like to emulate in some way (no, I am not going for my own original, non-derivative aesthetic, thanks for asking). I think AB Chao nails it with her home, perfectly. Cincinnati’s own Blake Fox has a gorgeous abode, too (the photos don’t do it justice). I’m also into Design Sponge, Happy Owl Glassworks, and Reform School. Plus stuff discriminatingly scavenged from stoop sales and markets around the world.

If anyone can pull all this together, it’s Kel. Expect to read more about this (or skip more entries about this) over the coming months. I’d start another blog just to chronicle the process but even I can recognize how insane yet another blog would be at this point.
