It’s not all cow pats and squealing pigs

Okay, I know I’m geeking out over this county fair business, but this article in my hometown newspaper covers some of the non-animal 4-H contests which kids and adults can enter at the fair.

This year’s biggest category at the Ross County Fair was photography (not going out on a limb to guess that the boom of inexpensive, accessible digital photography has boosted the number of participants to 300), but there are also contests for stuff like fashion design, floral design, cookies, gift wrapping, and various arts. Like I said, the blue ribbon winners in categories like pies and cakes get auctioned off for several thousand dollars to local businesses at the end of fair week, so this could be a very lucrative hobby. I will definitely report back on which winners sold for how much when the paper publishes the figures after the auctions. Betcha can’t wait!
