Like Lysol in the eyes?
I have neglected to link to Amy Alkon’s response to my post on inconsiderate public smokers only because I have been in deadline hell.
I like Amy’s reply. The remarks from those who have commented on it…not so much.
It seems that even when you state clearly and repeatedly that you abhor the idea of attempts to legislate manners or restrict freedom, some people desperately want to believe that you don’t really mean it, and are really an authoritarian who’s got a secret plan to ban their fun and throw them in jail. People also seem to want to feel very pissed off with any suggestion that some smokers could possibly ever be rude; I’m not sure of their reasons for wanting to feel this way, but I’ve got some hunches.
I have more thoughts on this, but they’ll have to wait for the weekend or some other time when I can really concentrate on what I want to say. More soon(er or later).
