Netflix vs Amazon envelopes. Really.
Dave Winer points to this Business 2.0 piece on the evolution of the Netflix envelope. I’ve been using Amazon’s DVD rental service for a few weeks now - they had a free month on offer, and I signed up for the three DVDs for £5.99 per month plan. (By the way, that free month offer is still on.) There are no due dates, no late fees, and no postage costs to pay.
So far, so easy. I posted our first DVD - The Royle Family - The Complete First Series (this must be my fifth time watching these episodes, and I never tire of them) - back on Bank Holiday Monday, and we had our next one (The Royle Family - The Complete Series 2) on Wednesday.
I was curious to compare the Amazon envelopes to the Netflix one, and it kinda looks to me as if Amazon is using a model similar to what Netflix had in 2001. Don’t ask me why, but I find that fascinating. I wish there was a museum full of this kind of thing. Sure, we’ve got the web, but even I get tired of the online space.
