Omar Sharif: Daredevil

Antoine is always trying to convince me to learn how to play bridge, which he enjoys (the legendary Acol Bridge Club is a five minute walk from our house). It sounds boring to me, especially since you can’t talk while you play. Now I find out that, far from being a sedate card game, it is a dangerous sport: UK taxpayers are financing a £165,000 “Be Safe” guide to not doing themselves an injury while playing bridge.

  1. Don’t do it. My parents were outstanding bridge players (indeed still are) and the violence of the rows the game generated echo down from my childhood. The divorce rate at Bridge clubs has to be seen to be believed.
    Poker, on the other hand…

  2. I second James’s comment above.My dad was a wonderful bridge player and tried once to teach my mother…gave up on the grounds that he could see from the first hour that this was going to lead straight to the divorce courts…
