On civilization

The rule of civilisation is not that everything you believe has to be civilised. It is merely that you mustn’t force others to believe it. All you may do is ask.
So sayeth Brian Micklethwait. I would add that a truly civilized culture does not force its beliefs upon people, mandating that they comply against their will.
This is the fundamental disagreement I have with approximately 95 per cent of the people I know, some of whom I even love. Which is why I usually refuse to talk politics with such people. If your worldviews differ so vastly, there really is no point in discussing specific policy points.
