On “magical thinking”

I hear people talk about this a lot, the delusion that many of us operate under that we know what specific people or groups are thinking about us, that we know someone is mad at us because they erroneously think that [whatever]. I heard someone talking about this last night and loved this part of what she shared:

Finally, my boyfriend told me: Guess what? Nobody’s mad at you. Everybody’s at the Giants game, eating hot dogs and not thinking about you.

Everyone laughed when she said this, because he was right and this kind of “magical thinking” is so rife within some of us. Maybe the idea that nobody’s thinking about us is scarier than the idea that everybody is mad at us. (Both good reasons to seek the annihilation of one’s ego.) Either way, I won’t forget that quote for a long time. Had to blog it.
