Picnik paid
Posted on October 25th, 2007 by Jackie Danicki
They left the upgrade open and free to all users for a lot longer than the promised seven days, but Picnik’s premium photo editing features are now only available to those willing to shell out $24.95 per year for access to them. I paid without hesitation. (Not quite true: The Flash payment form did annoy me just a little bit, which will surprise very few people who’ve heard me go off about the abuse of Flash.)

Hi Jackie, thanks for the support! I’m the designer over at Picnik — can you send me a note regarding what ticked you off about our order form? Is it just the fact it’s in Flash (and thus no auto-complete) or something else?
Okay, I now love Picnik even more. Thanks for asking, Peter!
In the interest of open conversation, here’s what I didn’t like about the order form:
There was some buggy lag and browser freezing when I was using the drop-down to select the type of credit card I was using. This is the kind of “little thing” that is actually a very big thing to me. I’m used to the straightforward nature of drop-downs, and throwing a spanner into the works - however brief the delay and freeze - just bugs (pardon the pun).
Also, it just seemed sort of unnecessary and over-the-top. Yeah, the auto-complete would have been nice, too.
Again, thanks for asking!
Yikes, there definitely shouldn’t be any lag on that drop-down. Was it consistently weird or did it get better after the first click? And do you mean the drop-down is over-the-top or something else? Thanks!
I clicked a few times, then sat and waited out the freeze. To be honest, this happens during almost every Picnik session when I am applying filters in the Create section. I’ve learned to be patient and wait for Picnik to do its thing. (The fact that I was so eager to pony up the cash for premium access despite this speaks volumes, I’d say, about the overall package.)
