Someone calling himself Rob (IP: 219.88.217.206 , 219-88-217-206.jetstream.xtra.co.nz) left this comment this morning:

You deserved it you fucking whore. At teh station you were smiling and winking like you liked it you little bitch. And now you come up with this bs. You wanted it at the time bitch you can’t deny it… you’re just a filthy slut.

Yeah, he’s got a sharp intellect, but is he any match for Alex?

Frankly I think this incident was blown out of proportion. Yes, I’m sure it was stressful to you, and I wish you the fastest recovery - but… Pepper spray in Tube tunnels? Police hunting bullies? Don’t you think this is a little unreasonable and grossly unrealistic?

Yes, how dare we expect the police to actually try to catch those who physically assault women and follow it up with sexually vile verbal abuse. My bad. Nothing to see here, people, move on.

On a serious note, I very much appreciated this comment from Jenny. A good point from her:

[Misogyny] is as despicable as racism or any other bullying. Misogyny is not a lesser crime and it should be as unacceptable to verbally or physically intimidate or attack women, as crimes of a racial nature are regarded. I can well imagine how the perpetrators of so-called minor misogynistic attacks gain confidence through behaving impunibly so their behaviour escalates to more vile forms.

I will add only that I do not think violence and abuse should be judged on a scale of awfulness based on who the victim is. “Oh, it was a white guy? Well, he can cry all the way to his warm house and dry his tears on a wad of £5 notes.” Whatever. No one deserves to be the victim of an unprovoked, violent attack - or of loud, obnoxious attempts at sexual humiliation in public. It is no worse that this happened to me because I am a woman.

On a related note, you may have read about a new study which shows that the so-called ‘oppressed’ individuals who wantonly assault, rape, murder, and steal from people actually do it “for fun and kicks”. I only hope that I made my attackers’ afternoon escapade a little less fun by refusing to walk away meekly or take their blows as if I deserved them.

  1. Ugh, I hate these damn internet trolls.

  2. These guys (including the horrific comments) are just on some sort of power trip. Obviously they feel small and weak compared to most men so they prop themselves up by picking on women. I’m sure there’s some underlying childhood problem, but basically they’re tools and an embarrasment to humanity.

So even if you were smiling and winking, the proper response would be to wink back and ask if you wanted to go out for coffee sometime. You’re obviously pretty and they’re just bitter fools who don’t know how to treat God’s best gift to man.

    Best of luck

    Daniel

  3. Just to clarify, the guy who made the comment about me smiling and winking is actually in New Zealand, and was obviously (for reasons of geography and the inaccuracy of his comment) not present during my assault. And while I often do smile at strangers - a bad habit from growing up in the Midwest, which I am trying to get out of - I don’t wink, ever, at anyone, because it looks stupid. Also, I was hit from behind by these guys; I didn’t see them until after they’d struck me.

  4. ” a bad habit from growing up in the Midwest”
Not a bad habit at all. Here in Texas it’s almost expected even if you don’t feel like it. Don’t apologize for having good habits.

  5. Well, I guess I should have said “bad habit to have in London”. It’s gotten me a lot of unwanted attention from icky men.

  6. These people are sad and inadequete, but I’m sure you’re well aware of this already Jackie. I’m glad there’s no lasting damage, either physical or psychological, I think you were extremely brave to stand up to these ballbags and take their photo. I’m afraid I also think you were lucky, it could have been much, much worse. So chin up, you did the right thing and you should be proud of yourself.

I’m not in the least surprised by the attitude of the police by the way, they’re overworked and under resourced and the transport police ususally get the guys who couldn’t get into the met. So I’m afraid I don’t hold out much hope of them stirring their stumps and either calling you, or catching your assailants.

  7. I finally figured out (I hope) why some of these idiots are doubting your story or thinking you blew things out of proportion. People aren’t reading the comments where you clarified (to the degree you were comfortable) what happened to you and why you aren’t going into every gory detail.

Still, though, there’s no excuse for how abusive and disrespectful some of these comments are.

I, for one, think you sound like an awesome woman. Thanks for sticking to your guns (so to speak).

  8. One more note. I read your profile. I’m from rural Ohio, too! I was born and raised in/around Salem, Ohio. I now live in Long Beach, CA, so I get your desire to move to LA one day, too. I wonder, does anyone move TO rural Ohio?

    Small world.

  9. There’s got to be a way to come up with a riddle here. Something like: “How are smiles and winks like uncovered meat?”

    Anyway, don’t stop smiling.
