Restless Virgins: Love, Sex, and Survival at a New England Prep School

My 15-word summary of Restless Virgins: Rich girls are sluts, rich guys are jerks AND sluts. Rich parents are damaged suckers.

I felt soiled, used, and ashamed after reading this book. Not because of the multitude of rampant casual hook-ups and group sex described on almost every page, but because the authors tried so very hard to dress their work up as highbrow and intellectual.

It didn’t work.

That said, this makes excellent airplane reading. It does not require your brain to be engaged at all, yet is trashy enough to hold your interest between the safety demonstration and the distribution of snacks. What hooked me is the fact that none of the characters make any sense, even though this is supposedly a work of non-fiction.

Bostonist has a more thorough, equally disdainful review. The Boston Globe reveals how the sources for the book ended up feeling betrayed by the authors (”It really feels like we’re the eggs they cracked to make their omelets.”). And here are some specs for decontamination showers, which you will definitely need if you pick this one up from the library. For God’s sake, don’t buy it!
