I can think of fewer epitaphs more enviable than the one my friend Nancy Rommelmann has offered about cartoonist and novelist Doug Marlette, who was just killed in a car accident:

At an event that included the nation’s top cartoonists and illustrators, I was certainly amongst the least important people in the room, but Marlette hung out with me anyway.

What a loss for the world.
