That beloved American classic

My hometown newspaper amuses as often as it infuriates:

The group [of Japanese exchange students] has been in Chillicothe for about one week now and has sampled American cuisine, although different from their traditional favorites, many have found a new favorite.

“I like fish and chips,” said Mitsuko Hosaka.

  1. I’m going to have to start reading the Chill ‘o Cothie paper more often.

  2. Moreover, they visited Southeastern… That alone increases the culture shock by an order of magnitude.

(Of course I can’t say too much… I reside near the Iowa-Missouri state line now.)

  3. Hey, Ross, I graduated from Southeastern! They have much better facilities now than they did when I went there (the building I attended was destroyed a couple of years ago and they built a massive new one on Lancaster Pike that contains K-12 for the entire district).

  4. Lancaster Pike?? Wasn’t that where Meade had storage facility? That’s a long move.

So then the “Big Blue Basketball Barn” is gone too? Yeah, fond memories of watching our bball team get our &#$ handed too us by the panthers there. Glad I played football instead. But I guess I should go ahead and admit it… I went to a prom there at Richmond Dale back in ‘88…. in the OLD gym. I nearly forgot about that.

BTW… I graduated from Westfall. Small world.

  5. Yeah, that’s Lancaster Pike (also known as Lancaster Road - I have no idea why the difference exists, and I think the latter is the official name according to the USPS). There’s now a mega-school out there, across from where the Mead storage facilities are/were.

And yes, the glorious “new gym” - as it was always known - is gone. That’s a real shame, because it was a great, modern sports facility…and I had a lot of happy memories of the place. My younger brother was a star player for the Panthers and I used to get SO into the games, especially if we were playing our arch-rivals Unioto. Anyway, I’m told they were legally obligated to destroy that wonderful gym in order to get the new school built - they couldn’t even repurpose it or donate it to charity.

I think I went to Westfall for a few basketball games. Small world, indeed!
