the bird thing is happening again!

The noise is unbelievable. This town is small - someone must know what this nightly bird jamboree is about. Tell me, dammit!

I was downtown all day today and didn’t see anything. Perhaps it’s only you? Spoooookeeeeeeey.
I am talking about Piatt
Park at 8.30PM every night. Also, they showed up again tonight at 11 and are still there, cheeping away. Maybe the spotlights for the church make them think it’s morning…
And as of 7.20 this morning, there is a bird IN MY apartment - a tiny, cute, and totally unwelcome bird. It dripped something on my couch, and is currently chilling on top of the kitchen cabinets. I hope he stays there until the builders come at 9 to finish off their work.
A damn bird.
We get giant swarms of birds in Austin at certain times of year, mostly the autumn I think, in downtown areas where there are tall buildings mostly. One year there were carpets of them in one of the mall carparks every evening for about an hour, at dusk. I guess they were gathering to migrate somewhere. It’s really freaky though, always makes me want to film it, especially the noise, which is unbelievable as you say.
No idea what your birds are or where they’re going, but maybe they will move on sometime?
As for one indoors- that always totally freaks me out, I’ve had it 3 times in my life (which seems a lot), can’t stand birds indoors or confined at all but especially not in the same space as me. Once was at college, so I rushed into my neighbour’s room panicking somewhat, and he came in and just gently picked the bird up then took it outside. I was all, wow, it’s that easy?
Ew, what if the bird pecks your eyes out?? No way am I touching its filthy carcass. It’s still in here, five hours later…I think. It flew down the hallway, so I’ve been staying far away so I don’t get pecked to death. Might go have a look and see if it’s gone. I’m taking MY LIFE IN MY HANDS, so if you don’t hear back from me, blame the bird…
Jackie, throw a cloth or towel over it if you can and then GENTLY take it outside. Don’t let it starve to death or die of thirst in your new apartment. It helps to have the room as dark as possible, first. They are much worse at seeing in the dark or even dimness than you.
I know you don’t like birds, but your cavalier attitude is really offensive, and not funny.
You’ve mistaken me for someone whose job in life is not to offend you, Donna.
I agree with Donna, you should throw a towel over it. That way you won’t get any blood on your shoes when you stomp it.
PS I do like birds, but I’m not interested in having them in my home, shitting all over my belongings and pecking the hell out of everything.
Thanks for the tip, JT!
I suspect that these birds are European Starlings looking to roost and party in the trees in the park. They were imported into this country in the late 1800’s by a gentleman in New York who wanted to introduce all of the birds mentioned by Shakespeare to the New World. So, the answer to your question what is it all about? Obviously the answer is ART.
Hope it’s gone now…
Right, and the other thing they might do is flap themselves to death in a panic against the walls and make even more mess. Ugh.
(This reminds me of when I was rude about dogs on Samizdata and upset most of Britain. What can you do. People identify with small unintelligent creatures to a very extraordinary extent.)
Yeah, it must have flown away after a few hours, because I didn’t see it after it flew out of the kitchen and down the hall. Now all I have to contend with are the messy, inconsiderate humans who keep leaving their filth behind (builders, one of whom even left his filthy footprints on the arm of my beautiful leather chair - yes, he used it to stand on).
Note: I do not hate humans, but some of them get on my wick.
The reaction to the Japanese politicial who referred to Minke Whales as “cockroaches of the sea” still makes me laugh years later.
