The NDP’s not-so-strange bedfellows
How unsurprising to learn that the “progressives” of Canada’s lunatic fringe New Democratic Party are big fans of George Galloway. Sure, Galloway is fiercely pro-life, supports those who would have gays and rape victims stoned to death, and unashamedly supports the “resistance” in Iraq, but the likes of the NDP don’t let these minor details stand in the way of an alliance with such a prominent fellow “progressive”. They still have not twigged that, as many have noted, Galloway is not anti-war at all; he’s just rooting for the other side.
To give you an idea of the sort of party the NDP is, one of their Galloway supporters, MP Joe Comartin, threatened to sue me and Oliver Kamm for libel a couple of years ago when we pointed out that he was recommending a notorious work of Holocaust denial by Roger Garaudy on the website for his NDP leadership campaign. (Oliver discovered this and I linked to Oliver’s post.) As what Oliver had posted - and, consequently, my post - about Comartin’s reading recommendations was entirely true, Comartin backed down pretty quickly when his legal threats were met not with fear but with derision and legal muscle of Oliver’s own. (Hilariously, Comartin’s son - a freshly qualified lawyer, armed with a knowledge of how to use Google but precious little in the way of awareness of his father’s choice of exalted authors - was the one in charge of threatening bloggers who dared to write the ugly truth about his father.)
So it makes perfect sense that the NDP would find common cause with the vile, litigious Galloway. Even Jane Fonda seems to have realised that he’s not the sort of chap with whom one should associate, but Hezbollah apologist Joe Comartin and crew carry on.
The NDP received nearly 16% of the votes in Canada’s 2004 national elections.
