Cincinnati Salon: Ken Cunningham on community-driven design

Originally uploaded by dynamist.

That’s what one of the participants in last night’s Cincinnati Salon said, and that’s what I love to hear. (Photos here.)

Ken Cunningham took us through the methods that he and his partner, John Spencer, use for community-driven design - a process that Ken has been using as an architect since 1967. He showed us the latest example, of the local Center for Chemical Addictions Treatment facility (known as the “Cat House” in the circles I frequent), which he and John have been tasked with redesigning. They actually presented their proposal this afternoon to the powers-that-be at CCAT, so we got a sneak preview of the designs last night. Ken walked us through the whole process using my living room as an example of how it works, and thanks to that - and the presence of several architects - I now have a ton of great ideas for what I’d do to this apartment if a) I owned it and b) I had an unlimited budget.

It was a great night. Thanks to everyone who came, and especially to Gina Gardner for bringing along so many wonderful contributors to the discussion!

Next months’s speaker will be Adriana Lukas, who’s flying in from London to do the honors, and August’s will be held at Park + Vine, where Dan Korman will be the speaker. Can’t hardly wait!
