Tokbox

With Skype down (via Doc Searls), I’m glad I am not scheduled for a video conference tonight. (When I’m in London and on my Mac, I use iChat. When I’m anywhere else and on my PC, I use Skype.)

If Skype’s outage leaves you up shit crick without a paddle, well…here’s a paddle.

Tokbox is a free, easy, web-based video chat service. Once you register, it detects your camera and mic and you’re up and running in seconds. Others do not need to register in order to video chat with you, and if you’re offline, they can leave you video voicemail without registering, either.

Nope, they’re not one of my clients and this is not a paid advertisement: I just like having free, easy alternatives to the core software that my life runs on. I can imagine Tokbox eventually becoming part of that core.

  1. I haven’t any camera–I’m doing purely audio podcasts, and wonder if there is a good alternative program similar to Tokbox that I can turn to if something like the Skype debacle happens again.

  2. Do you mean voice conversations you wish to record for a podcast?
