Trailers just ruin movies

I average one trip to the cinema per year. But I went twice this weekend. Well, when in Hollywood…

I saw two films that I enjoyed hugely. But I am not going to embed or even link to their trailers, because if you see them, you have little reason to see the movies. If you really want to find them, I figure you know how.

Because I mostly ignore movie-related things, I had not seen trailers for either of the films, and indeed had not heard of either of them before I started making my selections. This was an excellent state of affairs, as I went in with low expectations and only a rough idea of the storylines. I was horrified to watch the trailers afterward and see that they pretty much gave everything away. What’s the point of that?

Anyway, the films were Savage Grace, starring the unceasingly exquisite Julianne Moore, and When Did You Last See Your Father? (which has an “And” at the beginning of its title in the UK), starring Colin Firth and Jim Broadbent. The former was strange and not flawless, but engaging and beautiful to watch. The latter was wonderfully British, with fantastic performances from every actor. It moved me to tears, but not in a cheap way. I was sorry to leave the characters behind in the cinema.

I recommend them both, but if I had to see one over again, I’d pick the one with Colin Firth. But that’s sort of a no-brainer, I guess.
