Tristissimus hominum

I play dumb (seriously, it’s all a very convincing act!) and ask Antoine questions about the olden days in this video clip from Sunday that I found on my camera just now. The sound is imperfect, so soz.

The subject of Tiberius (NSFW) first came up when we were in Rome for New Year’s Eve 2005 and I said I liked that name for a baby boy. Antoine spluttered, and did so even more when I suggested Lucretia as a girl’s name, hopefully as a twin for little Tiberius. What can I say? They never taught us about history’s perverts and rape victims at my school.

  1. Peter O’Toole did a nice job portraying the warped mind of Tiberius in that one movie.

“Out of the water, my little fishies!”

Although Caligula made Tiberius look like Mr. Rodgers in comparison.

  2. Antoine tells me that Caligula thought Tiberius was a deeply disturbed pervert…

  3. I assume you’ve seen “I, Claudius”? Good fun.

I myself am mildly obsessed with the name Augusta (an honorific in ancient Rome) but my husband hates it. Well, we’ll see who wins that battle once I actually go through the whole gestation and birth business
