(Un)forgiveness and resentment

My favorite part of the Lord’s Prayer (you weren’t expecting this, I know!) is:

Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

You don’t have to believe in a higher power in order to get something out of this one. At this point in my life (it was not always so), I make a real effort to forgive as I would like to be forgiven: completely. No throwing the incident back in the person’s face, ever. Otherwise, is it really forgiveness at all?

Reminds me of one of my favorite sayings I happen to hear quite often in certain rooms:

Holding a grudge is like taking poison and waiting for the other guy to drop dead.

  1. Dead right. It’s my favourite bit too, and something that I work hard to make part of my life on a daily basis.
