Villandry

On Friday night, after checking into the MeliĆ” White House Hotel, we went for a wander around the general Fitzrovia area. The first place we popped into was Villandry in Great Portland Street, an exquisite little food shop with a bar and restaurant (with wifi). We made only two small purchases: a pot of Claire’s Homemade Strawberry and Elderflower Jam (for Antoine’s mother, Claire) and a bag of gourmet Bombay mix (for Antoine’s father). Just because we weren’t going far on our weekend break didn’t mean we shouldn’t bring back souvenirs.

We went back today, to try to find something from the Villandry bakery to buy for our Mothering Sunday lunch with Antoine’s parents. They had only one item left: a not inexpensive raspberry and blueberry cheesecake, all there but cut into eight slices. “If I buy the whole thing, how much of a discount do I get?” I asked the very friendly chap (again, not British) who waited on me. He smiled and took out his calculator. Then he offered me more than 20 per cent off.

Of course we bought the cheesecake (isn’t it pretty?) and of course we’ll be back. I just hope the wifi is free.
