Here’s a word of advice: Don’t hand your debit card over to a hotel clerk to guarantee your room, even if someone else is going to be footing the bill when you check out. Because they will still debit your bank account hundreds of dollars ($512, in my case, for two nights), and it may take 15 to 30 days to refund that cash to you. (I’m at a different hotel now, where they warned me against using a debit card to guarantee the room for just this reason.)

Especially try to avoid discovering that this has happened on a Friday afternoon, after your bank has closed for the weekend.
